The 5 freedoms of animal welfare apply to corgis

Part of our education and community outreach mission as a responsible corgi breeder relates to animal welfare.

Animal welfare is directly related to how an animal faces adequate living conditions. Therefore, the World Organization for Animal Health, created by an international agreement in 1924, became the government entity in charge of “achieving a world in which the welfare of animals is respected, promoted and advanced, in a way that complements the search of animal health, human well-being, socio-economic development, and environmental sustainability.” As a consequence, 5 pillars known internationally as the 5 freedoms of animal welfare were developed that describe the rights of animals that are under the responsibility of humans.

The 5 freedoms are:

  1. Free from hunger, thirst, and malnutrition. Guarantee access to drinking water and food according to the species.
  2. Freedom from fear and anguish. Ensure that their treatment and conditions avoid any type of mental suffering.
  3. Free from physical and thermal discomfort. Provide an adequate environment that includes hygiene, shelter, and a comfortable rest area.
  4. Free from pain, injury and disease. Ensure prevention or rapid veterinary diagnosis and treatment.
  5. Free to manifest natural behavior. Ensure adequate facilities, with sufficient space, and in the company of others of their kind.
A happy corgi is a well-cared corgi.

We uphold these 5 freedoms as a guideline in the responsible treatment and ownership of our corgis, and we want other corgi owners, whether Cardigans or Pembroke, to also be faithful to maintaining them as part of their relationship with and ownership of their pets dogs.
